Sonoran Mixed Woody and Succulent Scrub

Background

Description and distribution  Description and distribution. This is the only Sonoran desert community with substantial dominance of cacti and other stem succulents. It is similar to creosote bush scrub but more varied and usually more dense. It is found on alluvial fans and slopes of the Santa Rosa Mountains, in the Little San Bernardino Mountains, on the valley floor north of Interstate 10 to just east of the Coachella Valley Preserve. Covering 136,017 acres, it is the second most abundant community in the Plan area. Currently, 57% of this community occurs on public land or private conservation land. Associated covered species. Species that are associated with this community are: Peninsular bighorn sheep, Palm Springs ground squirrel, Palm Springs pocket mouse, desert tortoise, burrowing owl, Coachella giant sand treader cricket, Coachella Valley grasshopper, and Mecca aster.
